Message Notes 5.30.21 | The Church Just Wants My Money | 2 Cor. 8:20-21
I. The church should secure money biblically
A. By teaching biblical principles on money
B. Through the generosity of its members
On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come.
(1 Corinthians 16:2 ESV)
As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
(1 Timothy 6:17–19 ESV)
C. By informing members of financial needs
D. Through prayer
And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
(2 Corinthians 9:8 ESV)
E. Not through traditional teaching on tithing
II. The church should spend money biblically
A. By supporting those who labor in preaching and teaching
Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.
(1 Timothy 5:17 ESV)
Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches.
(Galatians 6:6 ESV)
In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel.
(1 Corinthians 9:14 ESV)
B. By supporting missions
Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are, who testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God. For they have gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles. Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.
(3 John 5–8 ESV)
C. By helping the poor
But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?
(1 John 3:17 ESV)
So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.
(Galatians 6:10 ESV)
