Message Notes 12.13.20 | How To Spot A False Teacher | 2 Peter 2:1-3

2 Peter 2:1-13

1 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.2 And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed.3 And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

I. False teachers are a constant threat to God’s people

Deuteronomy 13:6-10
6 “If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or your daughter or the wife you embrace or your friend who is as your own soul entices you secretly, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods,’ which neither you nor your fathers have known7 some of the gods of the peoples who are around you, whether near you or far off from you, from the one end of the earth to the other8 you shall not yield to him or listen to him, nor shall your eye pity him, nor shall you spare him, nor shall you conceal him.9 But you shall kill him. Your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people.10 You shall stone him to death with stones, because he sought to draw you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
II. False teachers are insidious and deceptive.

III. False teachers have a destructive doctrine.

Matthew 1:21
21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

John 6:39-40
39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

IV. False teachers have an enticing influence.

V. False teachers have impure motives

VI. False teachers slander the truth.

 John 14:6
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

VII. All who follow false teachers are heading for eternal destruction.
