Message Notes 1.24.21 | How To Live In Light Of The World On Fire | 2 Peter 3:10-13
2 Peter 3:10–13 (ESV)
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
I. In that day, there will be disastrous consequences.
Isaiah 13:9 (ESV)
9 Behold, the day of the Lord comes,
cruel, with wrath and fierce anger,
to make the land a desolation
and to destroy its sinners from it.
Romans 2:4 (ESV)

A. Christ’s return is a certainty.
Hebrews 9:27 (ESV)

B. Christ’s return is sudden.
Matthew 24:42–43 (ESV)
42 Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into.
C. There is no escape for those outside of Christ.
D. Christ’s return will bring destruction to all proud works.
II. We must be holy looking for that day.
A. Since Christ will return in judgment; we must be holy.
1 Peter 1:15 (ESV)
15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,
1 Peter 2:12 (ESV)
12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.
B. We must be looking for and hastening that day.
2 Timothy 4:8 (ESV)

Matthew 24:14 (ESV)
14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
III. There will be a new heaven and a new earth in which the righteous will dwell.
Romans 8:20–22 (ESV)
20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.
Revelation 21:1 (ESV)
21 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.
