Message Notes 1.10.21 | Scoffers and The Coming Judgment | 2 Peter 3:1-7
2 Peter 3:1-7
1 This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder2 that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles3 knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires.4 They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.”5 For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God6 and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished.7 But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
I. When scoffers attack your faith, remember God’s Word.
A. We must be stirred to remember God’s Word.
B. Remember the Old Testament prophets.
160 The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.
C. Remember the commandment of the Lord.
II. Scoffers scoff because they willfully ignore that God created the universe and judged the wicked in the flood.
A. God’s Word predicts that scoffers will come in the last days following their own sinful desires and denying the promise of the second coming
34 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.
1. Scoffers live according to their sinful desires.
2. Scoffers charge that God’s promises have failed attacking His honor.
3. Scoffers assume that God did not act in history to their error.
B. Scoffers willfully ignore that God created the universe by His Word and judged the wicked in the flood.
1. Scoffers willfully ignore God’s authority as the creator of the universe by His word.
9 For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.
2. Scoffers willfully ignore that God by His Word destroyed the world by flood.
III. Scoffers scoff at the promise of Christ’s coming because they willfully ignore the future judgment.
15 “For behold, the LORD will come in fire, and his chariots like the whirlwind, to render his anger in fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.16For by fire will the LORD enter into judgment, and by his sword, with all flesh; and those slain by the LORD shall be many.
1 “For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the LORD of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.
