What Is A Good Church? | Acts 2:42

I want to let you know right up front that we will be looking at 10 traits of a good church. This means I will not be able to go into a great deal of detail on all of these points, but my desire is that we will have a good grasp of what a good church is when we are done. The reason I say we will have a good grasp of what a good church is is primarily because I have found often churches want to know what other churches are doing, and then they try to mimic that, and churches have become really good at doing and not so good at being. So my prayer is that we will spend less time doing and more time being. There are three specific reasons why I believe this is an adequate message.

First, it is entirely possible that someone either here or that may listen online is in the process of looking for a good church, and to find a good church, we need to know what to look for. I have found that there are many reasons that people pick churches, and not all of them are based on the Bible. Some people just like the vibes they get from a church. Others perhaps feel welcomed and loved. Some people pick a church based on what their kids like. Others prefer a church based on the music or even the building. Some people may choose a church based on how the pastor dresses. All I am saying is that we need to understand what the Bible tells us a good church is.

There is a second reason I am preaching this message. It is possible that you have friends that are looking for a good church. Have you ever been talking to someone and heard them say they are looking for a good church? I love what I hear Bill Sexton say when people visit and tell them they are looking for a church. He always says, well, you can stop looking. I just think that is a great attitude to have about our church. Personally, I would like you to be able to offer specific help to others who may be looking for a church. The first place we should look is the Bible, but that may not occur to everyone to see what the Bible says about what makes a good church.

Lastly, I am preaching this message because I believe that we can use these traits to evaluate our church, and we can improve where needed. Now before getting into this message, let me be clear that there are no perfect churches because all churches are made of imperfect people. You may have heard the saying, “if you find a perfect church, don’t join it because you will ruin it” Even though perfect churches do not exist, there are good solid church, and I think it would benefit us to strive to be one of those churches, for the glory of God.
